This GB 1 d - British penny (old) black stamp was issued in 1840 as part of a definitive issue.

5980 GB SG1 1d Black Plate 11 "QH" on Cover 1840. Sc#1 Mi1 4 Margins. C£16000: 1d Black Plate 11 "QH" on cover. 4 Margins (close at SE corner) AS72. Small tear on "PE" of "PENNY", although almost certainly period to when the stamp was cut. The letter was sent 18th May 1841 to Francis Bannester, Barling, Rochford, Essex - A small estuary village on the North bank of the Thames. Francis Bannester, born 1793, owned and farmed Rushley Island.
